Level 1 Information

 

GPAC SWIM SCHOOL

LEVEL 1 CLASSIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS


Goals:

 - Begin to develop water safety skills.

 - Become comfortable in the water without assistance.

 - Begin to learn basic swimming skills.


Prerequisites:

       - Children must be completely toilet trained. No diapers or rubber pants are   allowed in the pool at any time.

n     - Children must be comfortable in and around water without a parent present.  Parents/guardians are not allowed near the pool deck or in the water at any time during the lesson.

        - Children must demonstrate the ability to take instruction from someone other than a parent/guardian or family member.

        - Children must be able to remain in the pool or along the pool apron during the entire lesson.  The pool temperature is normally kept between 80-82 degrees.

        - Children must be at least four years of age.

 

Safety Skills Taught:

 

       - Proper pool entry and exit (using the ladder, sliding in from the side of the pool)

       - Moving along the wall

       - Safety outside of the pool

       - Obeying lifeguards and pool rules

 

Water Skills Taught:

 

        - Learn how to blow bubbles with face in the water.

        - Learn how to kick while holding a noodle.

        - Begin to demonstrate freestyle arm cycles.

        - Float on stomach for as long as possible.

        - Float on back for at least one minute.

        - Become comfortable in and around the water (including retrieving items from the bottom of the pool).

 

Advancement:

 

        - “Bubble Ear” – demonstration of side breathing

        - Submersion for at least 5 seconds in a relaxed manner

        - Kicking with a kickboard for at least 15 meters without stopping

        - Kicking with a kickboard for at least 15 meters with face in the water blowing bubbles

        - Treading Water

 

Swimmers must master ALL exercises in the Advancement category before they can move on to Level 2.  Some swimmers may have to stay in this Level for more than one round of lessons in order to accomplish all Advancement tasks and move on to Level 2.
